HopeHealth’s J. Harrell Docherty, MD, receives FMU Alumni Award
Dr. J. Harrell Docherty received the Professional Industry Award in Medical and Health Sciences at the Francis Marion University Alumni Awards Ceremony.
Dr. Docherty, who graduated with a degree in biology from Francis Marion University in 1989, received the award for his participation in health missions. Since 2016, he has been involved with Kidz Konnect 4 Jesus ministry in Belize, initially established by Florence’s Cornerstone Church. Dr. Docherty participates in medical missions every three months, helping to provide medicine, ministry, and medical care.
On receiving the award, Dr. Docherty shared, “I was very honored and humbled to receive this award from Francis Marion University. I would not have thought of myself as doing anything special; I have just been doing things I enjoy as my version of giving back to the community. In addition to my mission work, I also work with a local Boy Scout troop. I’m very proud to have graduated from Francis Marion. They have a good reputation for getting students ready for the medical field and into higher institutions of medicine.”
Dr. Docherty is a rheumatologist currently serving patients at HopeHealth on Palmetto Street in Florence and at HopeHealth in Manning on Mill Street. Board-certified in internal medicine and rheumatology, his practice focuses on patients with rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, lupus, and other conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system.
