What is Endocrinology?
Endocrinology is a specialty that offers diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the endocrine system, such as diabetes, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, and adrenal insufficiency.
What is the endocrine system?
The endocrine system is comprised of glands that produce hormones directly into the bloodstream: the pituitary, pineal, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, testes, ovaries, and the pancreas.
These hormones communicate with various areas of the body to control and coordinate functions including digestion, metabolism, respiration, reproduction, growth, sleep, and mood. When any hormone production is compromised, it can cause common conditions including:
- Diabetes mellitus
- Thyroid disease
- Hyperparathyroidism
- Addison’s disease
- Osteoporosis
- Cushing’s disease
